Forum OpenACS Q&A: Connection Refusal?

This is probably an odd question. I just installed the OpenACS and it
works great. Sometimes in the past when I have something on my
computer that I want to show people, I'll just dial-up and check to
see what IP address I've been dynamically allocated and then send an
email or just go to work and leave it connected and I can jump in with
that IP. This still works with my apache server which is running on
port 80 but not for the ACS which I currently run on port 8000. It
responds by saying 'Connection was refused by Server' could this be
something I (mis)configured in the nsd.tcl file? I get in locally by
using localhost:8000 and it is working fine. All permission are open
on all www/ files. Any help would be appreciated....

I don't have any answers, but I sympathise. When installing a new ACS, I usually simply copy over a working nsd.tcl and ad.tcl, and modify these accordingly. I recently set up an acs test system with a sister company, and spend five hours trying to figure out why I kept getting the connection refused errors. It would be useful to put together a tick-list of variables to check... i.e., what is $host set to in nsd.tcl, what is the system URL set to in ad.tcl, who owns /home/nsadmin, what port is set for nssock, etc....

In the meantime, have you tried running AOLServer with a standard nsd.tcl (i.e. sans OpenACS) and seeing if you are recieving http connections on port 8000?
