Forum OpenACS Q&A: AOL server crashing

Posted by Bob Powell on
Hello everyone:

I recently upgraded to OpenACS 5.1.2, Postgres 7.4.6 and AOL server 4.0.8. I starting getting AOL server crashes and was advised to upgrade to 4.0.9. My system appears to be behaving better but it crashed again today after three or four days of no crashes.

The last entries in my error log before the restart were:

DEBUG: deprecated proc site_node_closest_ancestor_package used

FATAL: received Fatal signal 11.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on? Is this error signal significant in determining what happened? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Bob, 99% of the time, a signal 11 indicates hardware problems. I suggest getting a memory testing program like memtest86 and running that on your system. If there are any errors at all, replace the memory (the program can tell you which stick of RAM the error is occurring on, I believe).

There has also been talk on the Aolserver list about a memory leak in Aolserver. You might want to join that list and keep up on the conversation there.
