I put up the patch we use to add this behavior at
http://xarg.co.uk/alternate-subsite.patch.txt
It's a bit messy and needs some cleanup.

I should point out we also create application groups for the
new "subsite" packages at mount time as well. That is
broken out into subsite::default::create_app_group
