I tried to load a URL into the "research papers".

*** portal::render_element show callback Error! ***

Database operation "select" failed (exception NSDB, "Query was not a
statement returning rows.")

The worst part is that I now can not access the control panel as I get
the same error

We had that problem also.  Check apm to see if both dotlrn_research and research_portlet are installed.

Also report the bug to the dotlrn bug tracker please: dotlrn.openforce.net

Rafael, I had the same problem, what you can do is delete that url, you can go directly to the user portal, then see it personal files and delete the URL in question, in this way you will be able to have your dotLRN installation working well again for that class.
