I have not been able to find a sid bootable iso so I've installed the etch netinst (4 times on two different machines) which gets confused when I add the sid repository line and run the apt-get update as per the http://openacs.org/xowiki/debian
I did manage to follow the instructions to get dotlrn installed the first time I went through it...using the etch netinst bootable cd
i selected both the desktop and mail server to be installed.
i think i used the synaptic to install postgresql8-2
then the apt-get install dotlrn did it's thing. I was very happy
I went to the http://localhost:8000 and it allowed me to configure the instance.
I was then able to login
then used another machine on the same subnet to try and access it....it didn't come up using the ip address with the 192.168.1.228:8000 or 192.168.1.228:8000/dotlrn note: the machine i was using was 184.108.40.206
i then edited the ip address in the config.tcl file to reflect the ip address of the dotlrn instance....then it let me access it from the other machine
i went and create a term, department, subject and a class..which all worked
next the browser became un responsive. so i closed the browser and opened it again...same thing i clicked on buttons and nothing happened...so my next move was to reboot and that was the end of that particular instance. The login screen came up and i entered the login and password and got the faint blue screen of death (if you know what i mean) actually i could get to a second terminal window and the other machine could still get to the login of the dotlrn instance but it was totally un responsive for both logging into the debian instance or logging into the dotlrn browser instance from a 2nd box.
i re-installed it on the same machine and on another machine in a different location and with those installations
...i had problems installing the postgresql8.3
i searched and found some other methods of installing postgresql and tried different combinations of the repository listing. i feel that debian gets confused when it has both sid and etch repositories but i have not figured out how to install sid, yet. daveb suggested some few things but then said I should do the unbuntu 7.10 but that he had not done either.
so now i've just finished doing the http://openacs.org/xowiki/ubuntu for the first time. I used the 8.04 server install and opted to have it install only postgresql. it installed and i confirmed that postgresql 8.3
i added the suggested hardy repository line and did the update and when i did the apt-get install dotlrn it said it could not find it...i also tried the apt-get install openacs and it didn't find that either. i typically try to eliminate the human error by copying and pasting those things and I always check by doing it multiple times to make sure it's typed right...
i'm now thinking may i need to try using the business card iso which they say has an option for loading SID.
and then hang out in the irc channel to see when hollymoo has time since he said he could help me get an instance loaded and i could monkey around with the scripts later.
